New England Law | Boston Professor Lisa Laplante was invited to Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University for their recent conference, Common Cause: Synthesizing the Work of Human Rights and Civil Rights Scholars and Practitioners.

Held on April 12, 2019, the event brought together students, scholars, practitioners, historians, a judge, and others to examine the origins, development, goals, capacities, usages, strengths, and weaknesses of international human rights law and U.S. civil rights law.

A noted expert on public international law and transitional justice, Professor Laplante moderated the symposium’s Transitional Justice panel, featuring Rachel Lopez, Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Andy and Gwen Stern Community Lawyering Clinic at Drexel University Kline School of Law; the Honorable Sophia J. Atcherson, a judge with the Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County; Stephanie L. Williams, Executive Editor of the Northern Kentucky Law Review; and Jennifer Taylor, Senior Attorney with the Equal Justice Initiative.

As Director of the Center for International Law and Policy at New England Law | Boston, Professor Laplante’s work includes transitional justice advising (such as helping local partners advise a Minister of Justice on methodologies for community-business reconciliation as part of its post-conflict transitional justice process) and involving businesses in transitional justice efforts (such as surveying post-conflict strategies that include a focus on business accountability).
