Dina Haynes, immigration law and human rights expert
What does it take to teach immigration law? Well, experience with the U.S. Department of State and United Nations certainly helps. That’s part of what propelled Professor Dina Haynes to New England Law | Boston, where she teaches students how to become immigration lawyers in a world where issues like refugees, asylum, and international human rights dominate the national conversation.
Professor Dina Haynes teaches, writes, and advocates in the immigration and human rights field, focusing particular attention on human trafficking and refugee and asylum issues. She came to New England Law from a background in human rights field work in Serbia, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia. There she served in positions such as advisor to the Ambassador of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Director General of the U.S. Department of State Secondee Human Rights Department, and Legal Interlocutor for refugees.
Professor Haynes brings that frontline experience and spirit to her position at New England Law, where she teaches courses in immigration law, human trafficking, international human rights, refugee and asylum law, and constitutional law. She also publishes regularly in these areas even as she continues her life's work to aid those seeking asylum in the United States after fleeing inhumane and dangerous political or domestic circumstances. Professor Haynes has included many New England Law students in her work researching and writing amicus briefs, papers, and other advocacy pieces submitted to courts and government bodies, or made available to advocacy groups and fellow legal scholars.
As director of the Immigration Law certificate program at New England Law, as well as the school’s Center for Law and Social Responsibility Immigration and Human Rights Project, Professor Haynes guides students looking for externships and other practice experiences, often aiding them in their efforts to secure highly competitive field positions.
