Jessica Mahon Scoles is a Staff Attorney at the Court of Appeals. Mahon Scoles began her career at the Los Angeles office of a national law firm and returned to the Boston area in 2015 to clerk at the United States District Court. She then gained trial experience at a small firm before accepting her current role in April of 2020. Mahon Scoles has a passion for clear and concise legal writing and enjoys working with students at NELB to help them find their voice as legal writers.
The case Mahon Scoles describes being most proud of is California Alliance of Child and Family Services v. Allenby, where she was part of a team that obtained a decision that requires California to cover the full cost of care for foster children the state places in group homes. 589 F.3d 1017 (9th Cir. 2009). Her role in the case included obtaining testimony from the directors of various foster care homes about the painful cuts they were being forced to make in terms of services for the children in their care. Their victory ensured that some of the state's most vulnerable children will receive the services they need and it underscored for her, as a relatively junior attorney, that a legal education can be a powerful tool for doing good.
